For graphic designers the type of font that is used in an ad is just as important as the designs and colors that are used. With thousands of different fonts out there to choose from, the problem many graphic designers face is having to choose which font will look good with the design and still allow others to read the advertisement.

While it might seem with thousands of choices to choose from graphic designers would be picking different fonts but the truth is graphic designers tend to use the same fonts as each other. Here’s a look at some of the most popular fonts that graphic designers choose to use in their designs.

The Helvetica Font

The Helvetica font can be found in hundreds of graphic designers portfolios. It is commonly used because of its thick, bold letters. However, some people claim that it is hard to read and the letters are too close together. Despite this claim the Helvetica font can be found in hundreds of advertisements and websites all over the Internet.

The Futura Font

Graphic designers who are designing large billboards or advertisements favor the Futura font. This simple, bold font allows people to read what is written from far away.

The Bodoni Font

Not all graphic designers design advertisements and websites, some do decorative designing. When this happens graphic designers tend to use the Bodoni font because it isn’t as standard as the other fonts, but still appears creative and pleasing to the eye.

These three fonts are just a handful of the fonts that graphic designers favor when they are creating their advertisements, or websites.

GIMP: A Photoshop Alternative for Website Design

Graphic designers are very particular about their software. Adobe Photoshop is a favorite for laying out websites since it can make professional gradients, use layers and has a heap of tools to do just about anything you can think of. It might be a little overkill, but it gets the job done right.

Now, if you’re a graphic designer fresh out of college or are just learning on your own, buying a copy of Photoshop can be a bit too pricey. So you’ll need to look for an alternative. The open source software called the GIMP is very similar to Photoshop – it comes with all the bells and whistles, layers, tools and gradients. But the best part is the “open course” part – meaning free. Completely free. No sign up, no several thousand dollar price tag.

Leaning about GIMP will help you learn how to use it faster. Check out some tutorials and other people’s work with GIMP to see what it can do – it’s very amazing that its free after you see what people make with it.

Go download it and get started right away. All of the tool icons look like Photoshop’s too so learning where everything is won’t take you very long. Make a few sample websites to get the feel for how GIMP works before you go job hunting and locate your most frequently used techniques (gradients, layers etc). Once you’re settled in, you’ll be amazed at what GIMP can do for you.

Web Publishing Made Easy

Web publishing software makes it easier for individuals and companies to create attractive content for their Web sites without learning the details of HTML, JavaScript and other languages used to build Internet pages. Although most of the Web publishing programs offer some level of helpfulness, some are much more powerful and intuitive than others. Choosing a highly ranked Web publisher will give you the opportunity to build innovative sites without learning a lot of complicate design code.

Adobe’s Web Publishing Software

Adobe has long been recognized as one of the best companies when it comes to Web publishing software. Today, they have several programs for companies and home users to choose from. Some get better reviews than others. Adobe Creative Suite 5 Master Collection, for instance, gets great reviews from virtually every expert. Since it costs over $1000, though, it might not be in your budget. Instead, try Adobe Dreamweaver CS5. It is a fairly advanced program that gives you lots of flexibility. It’s not as powerful as Creative Suite, but, then again, it only costs a couple hundred dollars. You lose a little bit of functionality, but you save a lot of money when you choose Dreamweaver.

Apple iLife

Mac users will want to consider Apple iLife. This software has Web publishing capabilities as well as options that will let you make customized videos that you can then burn to a DVD. Given that it costs under $100, this is one of the best choices for anyone with a Mac. Don’t count it out because it has a small price tag. It consistently receives great reviews for its flexibility and intuitive controls. This software is great for beginners as well as more advanced users.

These are just a few of the most popular options available today. New programs come out all the time, so be sure to read up-to-date reviews that help you choose software that meets your specific needs.

Having Your Own Website

If you have a business and are new to the Internet, you might want to think about getting a website so you can promote your product or services. With today’s technology, everyone uses multimedia to sell things and the Internet is just one way to do it,

If you know nothing about designing a website, you may want to hire a graphic designer that can build your website for you. Graphic designers can really make your business pop out on a web page and it will be a site that people will want to come back to. You want to wow your visitors when they type in your web address.

If you don’t want to hire someone to design your website, then consider learning web coding yourself. With the many advancements available these days, building a website isn’t as difficult or intimidating as it used to be. If you are considering learning yourself, there are many courses you can take, some even at your local community college.

You could also learn by taking an online course, but you won’t get the one-on-one hands-on experience you get when in a classroom setting. There you will be able to learn directly from the instructor and ask questions immediately if something stumps you. You will have a textbook, quizzes and tests that will guide you along the way.

You may even have a final project that consists of designing your own web page, which could be your own businesses website. If so, then you will be able to get professional feedback from your teacher as well as the other students.

Consider taking a course in graphic design so that you can see the inner workings of building a web page. Who knows, maybe one day you’ll be designing web pages for other people.

The Graphic Change

The world was once defined by ink. All words were splattered across pages, forced to indentations and plain text. The desire to convey messages – to earn the public’s favor and gain their replies – was the domain of the process of printing. All advertisements were trapped to magazines and slick editorials; and, though the effect was positive, it was not all encompassing. Design was unable to reach the masses quickly. All pictures had instead to roll out from the presses and be packaged away.

Such times eventually faded, however, and were replaced with success.

The introduction of the Internet (begun in 1965 but only reaching full public awareness in 1991) shaped the realm of graphic design. No longer were individuals shackled to the paste and paper format. Instead they could utilize the potential of virtual shapes, colors and statements. All ideas could be formed; all attempts could be made. There was no longer the limits of reality, the stutters of a hand. A keyboard could yield infinite possibilities – creating lines that had never before been seen.

And this was vital in reaching the public and securing popularity. With a simple touch of a screen, users could be offered access to companies, services and messages. They could immerse themselves in virtual worlds while playing games like Assault Cube with others in other locations.  They could kill time online and drift away relieving stress with games like Tower Defense.  The effect was instantaneous; the results were quick. All campaigns could be conducted within the Internet, sprawling out across endless sites and pages. Exposure was immediate and widely spread.

And this continues even today. As of 2011, the graphic design industry thrives across the web -offering freelancers and professionals alike the chance to reach the masses through online means. Through the use of quick layouts, images, GIFS and more, all messages can be delivered and form the highest impact. Art can be made accessible, rather than being confined to print (where not everyone was certain to see it). The method flourishes and provides all with the needed capabilities.

Change has arrived – and will always remain.

Basic Tips For Graphic Design

Pro graphic designers rely on a lot of fancy training, experience and software to achieve what they do. But there are also some basic principles they utilize that are helpful in everyday graphic design. Whether you are designing by hand or using publishing software, these tips will come in handy.

#1: Consistency is the key. When it comes to colors, layout and type, consistency is going to be the key to creating the type of design that will truly hold together. All of your headings, captions, subheadings and so on should all be handled in the same manner throughout your website or document. All of your basic text should also be the same. You should only apply different treatments when changing the information that you are offering or to emphasize specific text.

#2: Colors. You should begin with a limited color pallet when you first begin, working with between two and three complementary colors that are working well with one another. From there, generate lighter and darker shades using the same colors, and then add additional accent colors as needed. Your pages will be more coherent when you work with a small pallet of colors in this manner.

#3: Type and Fonts. Just like with colors, it is really important for you to just pick a single typeface or two typefaces that are complementary to one another. They should be just different enough that you can distinguish one from the other without being too drastically different from one another. If you choose typefaces that are bold with a lot of character, then you should use them sparingly otherwise you may overwhelm your design without actually intending to.

These few basic tips can really go a long way in helping you attain the cohesiveness that you seek in your design pages. Keep them in mind whether you are a beginner or a pro in the realm of graphic design and layout.

Using Multimedia to Make Your Website Stand Out

In today’s world, with so much business done online, it can be hard to make your website stand out from the competition. If you are looking for ways to distinguish your products from the rest out there on the market, then you may want to consider incorporating multimedia into your website.

One of the most popular and effective multimedia tools is Flash. Adobe Flash lets you add animation, like rotating ads, to your website. You could create a stunning advertisement or other type of animation in Flash to showcase your products. Most companies find that using Flash on the main page is the most effective implementation method.

Another interesting multimedia tool is to incorporate a video player on your website. This is a fairly easy thing to do that will make a big impact. The video can be streaming on your website and display customer testimonials, interesting facts about your product, or even something humorous. The point of using a video player is to grab the reader’s attention.

You may also want to add a calendar to your website. This is especially useful for event-focused companies. Add a simple multimedia calendar to your page to show customers where you’ll be and when. If people can actually see the dates of your events, they will be more likely to attend.

Many companies add a photo gallery to their websites. This is a fun and interesting way to showcase your products and events. It can also help customers get to know your company better. You can put pictures that show actual customers using the product, the product’s manufacturing process, or even members of your corporate office. The options with a photo gallery are limitless!

Adding multimedia to your website is a great way to get your company to stand out from the competition.
